Guest guest
I've been told that there is something spiritual about the act of smoking. Uh-oh did I hear a loud communal groan?! I also am very anti-smoking and was surprised to learn in my Western Medicine class how many diseases are brought on and/or exacerbated by smoking. It is a horrible habit and the hardest of all addictions. I've heard that people that work with addictive behaviors would rather work with a heroin addict than a smoker. I heard about the following website on NPR. It's had great ratings at helping people to quit. http://www.quitnet.com/ Then there's that adrenal connection: " People that have a diminished output of cortisol can exhibit any of the following symptoms - they will crave substances that will temporarily raise their serum glucose level such as caffeine, sweets, soda or juice, tobacco, marijuana. " I've seen some nice success stories come thru the clinic....acupuncture helps but I think the herbs are the key. One woman detoxed thru her skin and had a period of acne immediately upon quitting. Another guy had absolutely no withdrawal, no symptoms, no detox....he was a roofer and sweated buckets as a job description! He was detoxing daily and all he had to do was not put the thing in his mouth anymore....got a different oral fixation, I guess! Guest guest
Hi Tone, You are totally correct....the will has to be there first. In fact, we won't treat anyone if the desire to quit is not there. My first question is always " have you had your last cigarette? " . I'm not unforgiving regarding backsliding....but if someone is coming looking for desire to be magically instilled...it ain't gonna happen. We can only help with the cravings, detox and healing and restoring the lungs.....and the emotions involved, too. As far as smokers understanding smokers, I believe that has to do with surrounding oneself with a support network. All the best on quitting again. You might investigate nebulizers or there also something called a Volcano (kinda expensive) for inhaling tobacco vapor without the smoke....I think it's a quit smoking device just a thought. BTW: I am an ex-smoker. Here and in Europe...blond and black tobacco....filtered, unfiltered, menthol. One help with the heat...watch some 'snow' movies....Dr. Zhivalgo, Himalaya, Smilla's Sense of Snow, Vertical Limit, I've got some Alaskan travelogues, as well. I start putting my snow scenes up on the fridge as well....but then I go thru this every summer in Texas. :-) Kit > Hi Kit, > > Hope all is well with you. Only a smoker can understand another smoker. Gosh, if it were that easy we could all be saving our health along with those around us and our pockets. > In or about 1999, I quit for three months. I was working an extrememely busy job where I was never still. I went the Zyban route first. That week was sheer hell and figured that it helped you to quit because it would eventually kill you. The side effects were horrendous. It did not take away from the grueling withdrawals though. The following weekend I spent the entire time on the floor in a fetal position feeling like someone was tearing my guts out. Well, I did go a whole 3 months. Gained 16 pounds and on a little tree trunk that is saying alot..lol but lost it within a month on it's own. It took one horrible day for me to run to the convience store to get just ONE. I actually sat in that lot and smoked the entire pack. > I started smoking when I was 12. That's kind of a long time ago. I do not boast about it. I am literally ashamed and I have reaped many a trouble from it. I think for me to lock me into a closet and throw away the key would be the best thing. Sure would allow me to vent:) Quitnet is a good site. Been there along with many others but the will has to be there or it is all talk. > For the ones that have never touched a cigarette, I truly do commend you. I pray that I will be able to quit before it quits me. > > Anyway hope you are all well and those who are sharing our heat, I do pray you have found your own ways of relief from it. > As for Peep...well never ever have I encounted such a stubborn and moody cat as I have him. Must be why I love him so much. > > Have a blessed evening all > Tone
