Guest guest
Thanks, Aubin. I personally am sprouting 9 cups of wheat to make a sweet bread recipe that actually calls for 12 cups, but I am a little short, so am sprouting what I have. I am going to use raw honey for the sweetener, hoping the pre-digestion that will occur when it rises (has to rise several times, for a total of 4-6 hours, maybe i'll let it go longer) will help break down the grain even more after the sprouting to give it a nice, light texture, the way soaking in yogurt does for pancakes. We'll see how it comes out... Chris ____ " What can one say of a soul, of a heart, filled with compassion? It is a heart which burns with love for every creature: for human beings, birds, and animals, for serpents and for demons. The thought of them and the sight of them make the tears of the saint flow. And this immense and intense compassion, which flows from the heart of the saints, makes them unable to bear the sight of the smallest, most insignificant wound in any creature. Thus they pray ceaselessly, with tears, even for animals, for enemies of the truth, and for those who do them wrong. Would a coffee filter also work? Anything (non-toxic) that will let the water drain out and allow some air circulation can be used on the top of the jar. Most health food stores have sprouting jars with screw-on plastic screen lids or lids with metal screen inserts, or you can buy just the plastic sprouting lids to go on canning jars. > How much do you sprout grains before using in bread? Just enough so it > _begins_ to sprout, or until it grows into a full-length sprout? I wait until the sprouts are maybe 1/8 inch long, a few will be longer than that by the time the bulk of the grains have sprouted. Then I dehydrate it and grind into flour. If you want to make bread with it, use hard wheat, not soft - not enough gluten in the soft wheat for bread and it won't rise properly and will fall apart. Sprouted spelt works beautifully for bread, IME, but I have a harder time getting the spelt to sprout successfully, it seems to be more picky about the temperature and humidity than regular wheat. Mold should not be a problem if you are doing it correctly. Kris > > > How much wheat do you sprout to make a loaf of bread? Guest guest
All sprouts are sprouted the same way. See our " links " and click " member's recipes " and then the file: " All about sprouting " by Ruth and Bob Bessen. Both of these members are sprouting experts and will probably be glad to " hold your hand " off list. You can start sprouting as simply as buying a sprouting jar which is nothing more than a jar with a mesh cover over it. You rinse the seeds twice a day and in between keep the jar on its side in a dark place. When you see some growth (usually after 3 or 4 days) you put the sprouts in a sunny place (so that they turn green) for a few hours. That's all there is to it. AFA recipes, sprouts are usually added to salads or are tasty in sandwiches .. But perhaps some of our members have other ways that they eat them. A newbie asks: > Where can I learn to sprout radish sprouts? And do you have any recipes for > the sprouts? Thanks. >

Suzanne <suziesgoats@...> wrote: hmmm, never heard of anyone sprouting hot pepper seeds... I know they take about 2-3 wks to come up when planting from seed, and I believe they like somewhat warm constant temp.. I would check out planting from seed (sprouting) and try it that way. I don't know that they will sprout with just moisture... Try some and let me know.. Suzi . Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now.
