Body brushing

Our skin is the largest organ of the human body! It breathes, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide from body tissues. It absorbs nutrients, manufactures vitamin D, renews some of its cells every 24 hours, and is constantly eliminating toxins from the body.

Dry brushing removes dead skin cells, keeps the pores open, stimulates the lymphatic system, removing toxins such as uric acid and catarrh. By dry brushing, you keep your skin conditioned, improve circulation, stimulate hormone function and rejuvenate your nervous system.

If you want better muscle tone and fat distribution within your body tissues, then dry brushing will assist in giving you what you want. It is an excellent treatment for cellulite and problems with retaining fluid. It is also an effective way of boosting your energy level and relieving sore muscles.

To get started with dry brushing, you first of all want to purchase yourself a natural-bristle body brush or mitt, such as loofah, hemp, juste and sisal. Later on you might like to switch to a brush made of coconut fibre as it can give you a more stimulating massage. For starters though, you should be able to find a natural fibre body brush at your local health food store. You might also want to make sure that you buy a brush that either has a long handle on it, or even a double-handled brush for reaching your back area.

The best time to do dry body brushing is right before you take a bath or shower. Start at the soles of your feet, gently brushing in a circular motion, always moving toward your heart. Continue in a circular motion, up your legs, buttocks, abdomen, stomach and chest, making sure to avoid the nipple area. Then starting from your finger tips, brush up to your shoulders. Avoid using the brush on your neck and face, as these areas are more sensative. You can use a face cloth in place of your brush. Spend a little extra time on the knees and elbows. Shake out your brush over the tub or sink. This entire proceedure should take about ten minutes and can be repeated if you are dry brushing as treatment for cellulite.

To invigorate yourself, take a hot bath or shower; for relaxation, take a warm bath or shower. You should also have a cool shower after having either a hot bath or shower, which helps enhance the stimulating affects of dry-brushing.

I like to finish this procedure off by massaging my body with coconut oil, sweet almond oil or jojoba oils. Avoid using mineral oil as it robs the skin of important nutrients and can be a potentially toxic and cancer causing chemical.

After a week or so you may notice skin imperfections and blemishes. Don't be concerned! Your skin is eliminating toxins more easily. Just keep dry-brushing and your skin will clear up and look better then before.

If you are body-brushing every day, it is a good idea to take a week off every month. This gives your skin a chance to rest and ensures that you are getting the maximum benefit.

Never share your body brush with anyone! Each member of the family should have their own brush and should not share with others. You can wash your brush or mitt with warm water and soap every couple of weeks. Make sure to put it in a dry place, to avoid the growth of mildew. To assure there is no mildew, I put my brush in a room with an air ionizer.

Dry brushing is a great way to bring about a more healthier and vibrant you! Have fun with it!
