Guest guest
I forgot to mention that he has always had very weak ankles and we always buy shoes with high medial support...and I just got him a new pair of running shoes that meet my standards, so I am sure this is not the problem. Caroline Hi guys, My son is 12. He has always loved to run and has joined Cross Country with school. He is finding that his left ankle is really hurting him. It is to the point where he is having a hard time and this is very frustrating for the both of us. I started him on some MSM the other day but not sure what else he could use to help him. I wanted to make some Deep Tissue Repair Oil but at this point and time I don't have the funds to do so. Not sure what else could help him. Any thoughts? Guest guest
Carolyn, I have just made a batch of it. I agree, the start up costs are killer because I could only find some of the herbs in 1 pound quantities. Would you like some? Guest guest
The school has a x country coach...don't know about a trainer of any sort...that I am aware of. I hadn't thought of taping his ankle...I used to do this when we would do hand techniques in Tae Kwon Do...because of the pain I get in my hands...and with sparring...but for some reason it hadn't occurred to me to tape his ankle. Duh! My neighbor...two doors down...is a former cross country coach...and he helped us with finding the shoes for him...they are running on mostly concrete and grass...so we bought shoes appropriate for that. We live in Florida...so there are no hills or anything like that. Actually...now that I think about it...one of my good friends is the trainer for one of the minor league baseball teams for the Minnesota Twins...I will check with him to see if he has any recommendations for taping of the ankle. He owes me a favor anyway...since I just made up flyers for his wife's newest real estate listing...lol. Thanks Shari!! You have given me new avenues to pursue for help. I know that when my kids ran cross country the trainer was there and she was very knowledgeable about how to tape ankles and knees. His xcountry coach should be able to give him some direction also. Guest guest
"that meet my standards" They may meet your standards, but do they meet the standards of what a kid needs for cross country? Xcountry is a whole other ballgame when it comes to running. How old is he? Is he running in high school or middle school? Hills? Grass? Dirt? Mud? Gravel? Pavement? Water? Then you get into up hills or down hills? Grassy hills or paved hills or gravel hills? What is his warm up like? How many miles is he putting in during the week? Cool downs? How many miles for his cool down? When I see my son I'll ask him about ankles. Jacques really enjoyed running. The more mud and rain the better. Which reminds me, I have to do timing on the meet next week! I really enjoy cross country. Shari
Guest guest
I will tell him, thank you!! One thing I'm not worried about here at all...is SNOW!! LOL I am very lucky your right...it honestly never occurred to me to ask my friend about it until you mentioned a trainer...silly me...I guess I don't think about what he does for a living...he's just Larry! LOL He was actually voted Trainer of the Year in their league for three years in a row...so I definitely will be pumping him for information. I am pretty excited about this whole cross country thing...it is his first time being involved in anything other than Tae Kwon Do...which we have both done since he was 5...so that has been 7 years. Which, by the way, he is going to be getting his first degree black belt coming up here...junior black belt of course...but still quite an accomplishment...and I have to say he has worked really hard and earned that belt...I am going to be getting my second degree...been a long hard road..but well worth the effort and time. I will be setting up my own school soon...under our Master of course, but it will be fun to do it myself. Thanks again! Caroline >Oh Caroline! You have a couple of gold mines right in your hip >pocket! You are a very lucky woman. > >Enjoy the season and tell your son good luck! Tell him he's >lucky. Guest guest
There is a way to strengthen ankles by using a theraband. Tie the band together, put it around both feet at the bottom of the toes and while holding the heels together, move the upper foot outward against the band. Repeat quite often several times per day. And, This is the best sports site I have ever seen! http://www.rice.edu/~jenky/sports/ Sue =================== The school should have a trainer available. Guest guest
Caroline, Is 12 yo old enough for cross-country? Are you sure he doesn't have a hairline fracture? Good idea to make sure this isn't the issue. You might want to talk to the school nurse if you don't have the funds to talk to someone else. You also might want to discuss with her/him the feasibility of your son doing cross-country. It might be a let down for him and hard on you to see his disappointment but ....well maybe imagining another scenario....think of all those little girls that want to be ballerinas. Or all the things kids want that just can't be ....I never did get that pony!!! I was very bummed...but grew out of it. I have an ex-boyfriend with weak ankles and still gets bummed at being left out of activities....life can be hard. Anyway, maybe this won't have to be the case but you might want to prepare the both of you for the possibility. It sounds like he should stay off of it while you help get circulation to the area....for healing. Heat will help. If there is pain and swelling you can do ice to get the swelling down then alternate ice then heat. Is there color change to the area? After it heals you can look the various ways to strengthen his ankles. JMTC, Kit > " that meet my standards " >
Guest guest
Hi Caroline, So good to hear he's just going through an adjustment!! Yes, heat will help the circulation after the swelling has gone down. Also if you have any topicals with menthol or camphor in them they will also help circulation. Menthol is derived from mint so if you have mint you can mix it with sesame oil (good for absorption) and apply it as well. You could even use clay, as it, too, improves circulation and will draw out any impurities that might be involved with injured tissue. If you're familiar with essential oils and have Rosemary, myrrh, and lemongrass are all good for his ankle. Anything that brings blood to the area will help...he could do light rotations while sitting....you could massage his ankle or even do some light skin brushing. Some one suggested strengthening the related musculature after he was better which is an excellent suggestion. .... a little story.... I was watching world class downhill skiing and watched this guy wipe out sooooo bad...he hit the fence and bounced around like a ragdoll, I was surprised that he lived thru it and damned if he didn't get up and walk away.....and they remarked it was because he was a firm believer in cross-training and weight-lifting to strengthened the muscles that hold joints well in place. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed, won't ever forget it, and tell the story often!! Good luck, Kit > Kit, > > Swelling was the first thing I looked for.
