Do I need to buy some expensive big bottle?

I use the cheapest stuff I can get and I buy a big bottle. Just make sure it's at least 80 proof, preferably 90 proof if you can get it.

Any brand but you really want 100 proof... 80 will work on powders or leaves (let it sit longer).. but 100 proof for roots, barks and seems to pull better in general... I sometimes use everclear also... then after it is tinctures I can add water when I take it.

hi all,

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday night. I was wondering about the Vodka needed for tinctures. Do I need to buy some expensive big bottle? Can I get a small bottle with an off brand or should it be the best I can get? I'd rather not have the big bottle though I am not sure how much I will be using right now anyway. I have hot peppers so thought maybe I could start on a tincture of that for now.

Appreciate the advice

I would, but if all you can find is 80 proof.... go for it... It will work... let it sit for a couple weeks or longer... peppers are soft and you've chopped them up.

Suzi,

So for fresh peppers I would use 100 proof then? I saw Everclear for the very first time in the liquor store not that long ago. Wouldn't have given it a second thought if I had not heard it mentioned here. Not cheap! :) I will see what is out there.

vodka is so not my thing :) but I do want to try and make this cayenne tincture. At least this first one for now.

Thanks so much

Appreciate your help as always

Two pithy catch phrases come to mind. You get what you pay for. And something is better than nothing. The good stuff would be best. I use Everclear for my external tinctures. Don't use alcohol for my internal tinctures. But even the off brand vodka would be better than using nothing at all.

When I tincture, I use enough liquid to completely cover the material I am tincturing in whatever container I am tincturing in. Shake a couple of times a day for a couple of weeks, then press.

Well how much vodka would I need and how many peppers would I need? Does that make sense? Say to a pint of vodka, how many peppers would I use? I am assuming I am chopping them up first.

I doubt if this is a tincture I would be using constantly anyway, right? So..it does not matter what brand of vodka then?

Thanks Chris

I do appreciate it

When I do my cayenne tinctures, I actually put the peppers in a blender, cover with the liquid, and puree the heck out of it, then bottle it and let it sit.

Appreciate the help. I am assuming that I just chop the peppers to half the container and fill the rest with vodka? For anything else that I might buy, I would get the c/s? correct? I know I asked this before and I apologize but I am senile..lol

Thanks again

It's funny. I know that there is not enough alcohol in a tincture dropper to effect in any way my recovery. It's just that I spent so long training myself to steer clear of it, it just doesn't seem right to ingest even that miniscule amount.

I use raw organic ACV and usually double the "waiting period" of the tincture. It doesn't work as well for the hard stuff, like roots and barks, but seems to do okay for general tincturing.

Obviously heart problems... I have taken it when I want to warm up in the winter also.

I ususally don't do cayenne unless emergency or in my complete tonic. And for a heart attack.. I would probably take a good shot glass full.

I've still got my habs tincturing in vodka in a couple of mason jars in the pantry in Florida. They've been there since about the middle of April (we've been gone since the end of May)...will be interesting to see what I find when we return the first weekend in November.<G>

BTW, so when do you actually ingest tinctured habs?? Do you use it in cooking, or just down a dropperful?? When would it be indicated?

Glycerine is the least effective of the three methods and works the slowest in the body. Using alcohol is the best method with apple cider vinegar taking second. Both of these methods make the active bio-components of the plant available to your body almost immediately. Glycerine as a preservative is quite good. It is also much easier foryoung children and the very elderly to take as compared to a tincture. No, glycerine is terrible for extracting. Best would be to make atincture, add it to water and slowly heat to drive off the alcohol andthen reduce the water by half, cool and add the glycerine. It won't lastas long as a tincture though. Might wish to use something to flavor itwith like honey or fruit juice.

So does anyone have the lowdown on making tincture without alcohol. You can buy ready-made with glycerin...what's their secret? Is it as effective?

Actually think there is enough alcohol in a few drops to trigger your (which is it? pancreas?) . I noted when I quit that a non-alcoholic beer made me want another one immeiately. My desire was not thirst!

Thanks, Suzi! I used to get glycerine-based for the cats. Guess it's a

good thing, then, that cats tend to be sensitive/responsive.......?
