Guest guest
Just wanted to share my experience on weight gain, and successfully dealing with it. With Graves, I was finding I was losing muscle mass, yet gaining weight and fat. I changed my diet to high protien, low carbs.........eliminating the complex carbs (pasta, rice, potatoes, bread)...do a moderate workout most days.......and WHAT A CHANGE! I've lost around 10 pounds.....and am leaner than I've been in years.......lost several inches. pretty much laid out the suggested diet for us in his last suppliment listing........and I can attest that it works! I believe that we can be healthy and lean....... Vivian ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Trouble is something has happened so that I can think of nothing but ice cream and candy bars and pecan pies and cigarettes. No matter how full I am I still and craving sugar and starch. Maybe I have become addicted. or I have hypoglycemia or ? At least I rarely give in to the cigaritte craving. I'll try giving up starch and sugar for a few days and see if the craving goes away. Guest guest
Kozy, I do a lot of simple carbs ..........raw veges, green leafy........ Only do limited fruit for a snack, and by itself......... Do LOTS of fish.....turkey........chicken.......beans.....unprocessed peanut butter. Good luck, Vivian ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Ann, Just a thought.......maybe allow yourself to have the foods you are craving in moderate amounts......and that will eliminate the cravings? What we eat together is important too. If one eats complex carbs.....accompany that with simple carbs. Don't eat protein at that time. My understanding is the big downfall is to eat protein, simple and complex carbs at the same time. I'm learning that it is better to eat fruit alone too........not with any other food group. I don't profess at all to know a lot about this..........I'm learning........but I'm happy with what I'm learning.......and seeing some good results. Good luck, Vivian ------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
I also am on a high protein, low carb diet, with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. The starches make me feel more hyper. Taking chromium helps with my sugar cravings. I take 200 mg twice a day. I know I am addicted to sugar, and cold turkey is the only way for me to really control it. I've also found that if I can stay away from starches completely for three or four days, then the cravings and hunger start going away. Good luck Ann. Guest guest
Hi again, I noticed I tended to eat more when I felt weak and then I found that the supplements also seem to curb the appetite. Guest guest
Thanks for the idea. I'll try that on bad craving days. Before graves disease I was into the " zone " diet where you have to have protein and fat along with carbs to avoid high insulin levels with the idea that high insulin levels make you store fat and forces you to eat more carbs. Trouble came from the days when I could eat candy bars and and ice cream all day and still lose weight. My mind set is out of whack. At least I've stopped gaining. Guest guest
Hi and All; Yeast or Candida Albicans in the intestines or systemic candida is not a " women only " problem, Yeast is an opportunistic infection and can infect anywhere where defense is low. Like thyroid problems, the symptoms are broad and difuse and can be attributed to many other things. Having systemic yeast is a life threatening condition which is rarely diagnosed by most mainstream medical practitioners. It is also very hard to treat. Often, people struggle with it for a lifetime having ups and downs of symptoms. It feeds on sugar, so, when one has yeast one craves sugar. There are many good books to be found on the subject in health food stores. Guest guest
Hi, I have been mostly at the ithyroid site. I went to a nutritionist with a Ph.D. She has me taking 1000mcg of chromium. I asked her if I needed manganese too since the one helps the other be absorbed. No. I noticed at taking 200mcg that sugar cravings subsided. I really need to rest my adrenals so have to be absolutely off of sugar. I mean I can look at cake, pie, and honey and not jump for it. So I am suggesting that if you feel the need for sugar that trying chromium will help, not may help. Swan
Guest guest
Hi ,
Have you tried a diet? I am not being a smart alec asking , it is just that many people assume that once they begin treatment the pounds melt away. My experience was that prior to treatment (synthroid) I dieted and it would NOT work, I still could not lose despite my convictions to sticking to the diet. When I began taking Synthroid I finally lost the weight I gained, but had to keep dieting to do so. I have been taking synthroid now for years...but STILL have to diet and watch what I eat because the weight comes right back on.....

Bev
Guest guest
Hi rauch,
I don't know how much of help I'll be,but I have lost about 10 or 13 pounds.I'm using the stairs at work, and have cut out sweets(have been eating fresh fruit when I want something sweet).Have been drinking water, and if I want a soda(I only have one a day,if I have one at all). Have been either walking or turning on a tape, and dancing for a hour.Just watching what I eat...that all I have been doing, and the weight has been coming off.I have set a goal, and plan to work to I get to that goal. Hope you reach your goal...take it one day at a time, and I bet the weight will come off.

That's the best advice I have. After being told to cut my starch servings down to once a day (I eat millet and hot cooked cereals) I've dropped about 35 pounds. I'm certain that if I went back to eating the way I used to, I'd put that weight right back on in a short period of time. Scary! Guest guest
Hi Janet, I had my MGB 2/5/01. I dang near dropped dead when I put on 8 pounds a couple months ago. Dr R suggested that I was drinking too much water and not eating small amounts often enough and not drinking gatorade. I made those adjustments and lost the added weight right away. Best of luck to you!!!! It can be shocking after all we have been through to put on weight. S weight Gain > Ok, I very rarely post, but I am freaking out now. Guest guest
Hmmmm gatorade instead of water, huh? I eat all the time, but not necessarily the right stuff. Water is free that's why I drink alot of it, well not really one 20oz glass a day is about it for my water intake. I''ll have to experiment on that. aW
Guest guest
I had surgery on May 23 and I went from 224 to 201 but I will say it has slowed to about 1/2 lb per day. There was even a day where my weight did not change. Your body might be getting ready for your period and believe it or not the angle the earth rotates on can effect the amount of gravity pull at any one location. The gravity constant is not constant, ie, 32 ft/seconds squared is an average at any one point on earth. If you would like further explanation I can go into more details, just ask. Try weighing just twice a week and these minor fluctuations will not be as apparent. Hang in there, Sherry > > Help! Guest guest
I didn't experience what you've described, however, you might just stay off the scales. First of all, if you're still eating soft, liquid foods then there's no way that you've truly gained weight/fat. No way. So my guess would be it's water weight. E-mail Dr. R's office and ask them what they think is going on. I'm sorry. I know it's upsetting to you... It would be to me or anyone who has went through what we have to lose weight. Guest guest
Marilyn, Don't panic. You're not failing the MGB! You may have eaten more salt over the last couple of days. Are you using the patch? If you are, this can cause water weight gain. Don't weigh but every couple of days. Did you take measurements prior to your surgery? If so, take them again and enjoy. You might not be " losing " at this point, but you're losing inches instead. Your body has to go through adjustments and may just be adjusting to having the surgery and the rapid weight loss. Have a protein shake or two, eat a popsicle and sit in the sun for awhile and enjoy life. The weight will start coming off again. (don't forget the sunscreen) I've been on a 3 week lull of no weight loss but know that it is only temporary. I've increased my exercise and am just waiting for the weight loss to resume. Good luck...try not to panic....this too will pass. (I did the same thing!) in SC 288/235 2/22/
