Guest guest
Marilyn: You will most likely get many replies but I will add to the list and say we have all been thru this. Or at least most of us have. Anywhere in your loss process you can hit a plateau. It is kinda like your weight has to stop so your body can catch up. Most of us have lost the same two-three pounds many times. Is it near your cycle? Have you done anything different. If not, just hold on. Some plateaus last a long time and others only a few days. I was on one plateau for 6 weeks. I am still on schedule with my weight loss and had my surgery 11-29-2000 and have lost 135 pounds. Keep on keeping on: Phyllis

Guest guest
Marilyn, it's probably just water, and the fact that your body is freaking out about losing the weight. It has been a proficient survivalist. Don't worry because your new tummy will win, eventually. At only a couple of weeks out, you are doing fine. Now its funny that I am the one writing this, because I plagued the list with my slow losses. I lost only 10 lbs the first 3 weeks! 18 lbs total for the first month. But I have consistently lost for 14 months, and I'm down almost 140 lbs. If you ever want to talk about it, feel free to email me privately. I feel that what you're experiencing is normal, and understand why it's driving you crazy, because I've been there!! manda > Help! Guest guest
is sooooooo wise!! something i did once during a small gain was this.... i wrote down everything i ate THE DAY BEFORE (if i keep a log of what i eat during the present day i tend to eat better)look at the calorie content and notice if it is balanced.... i BET you will see that it is around 1800 cal and mostly carbs. that is what mine was i didnt think i was consuming that much but i was! my meals are so small sometimes i guess i think they dont count. and it was certainly not balanced..... nary a veggie in sight!! soooooooo if you cut your calories to around 1400, and balance the food groups.... voila!! you will take off the weight SLOWLY. then just watch what you eat after that and adjust your intake accordingly sounds familiar, huh? i agree with julie about WW i was never a big fan of WW but their " points " program is great!! it is strange at first but in a week you do great with the system....my hubby (who is a macho, i-dont- need-no-stinkin-diet kinda guy)was pursuaded to go to meetings by our daughter who told him she needed him to help her and be her buddy for this.... has lost 25 pounds! my daughter has lost 20! slow but steady they are doing great! some say we never need to diet again thats BULL we ALL need to diet, if for nothing else-- for balancing our nutrition! This is a TOOL we still need to not eat too much of the wrong things.....just like anyone else i feel this surgery made me " normal " it didnt make me immune to weight issues. this too, is my OPINION!!! everybody be well xoxoxo cathy > I have never gone back on liquids --- I didn't even stay on them but a > couple of weeks at the beginning. > > The following is MY OPINION....... > > The surgery for me was a tool. Guest guest
Dear Fran and all, I sympathize with all of you who don't want to gain weight. I am 5'9 " , and weigh about 139 lbs. When I had Graves I weighed about 129, which I loved (I didn't love being sick, though) although some said I looked too skinny. When I got on Tap, I was still eating like a horse (another thing I loved about Graves), but I started to put weight on. When I felt myself going above my set point of 139, I asked the doctor to lower the dose, as I wrote previously. I could feel my metabolism slowing down. I know that when your metabolism feels like that, you can eat well and exercise, and still gain weight. I've been cured now for about 5 years, and eat healthily and exercise almost daily. However, sometimes I feel heavier, like my metabolism is slowing down. When that happens, I try to streamline my diet by eating mostly what I call " super foods, " e.g., nutrient dense lean protein, veggies, fruit and complex carbs that are supposed to be really good for you (such as egg whites, blueberries, spinach, garlic, strawberries, chicken breast, tofu, oatmeal, yogurt, etc.). I also take supplements that I was taking when I became hyperT, thinking that my thyroid needs a " boost, " such as Siberian Ginseng and Progest. I know how frustrating it is to eat right and exercise and still gain weight, and to feel that whatever you do is to no avail. I try to do SOMETHING fast after gaining 4 pounds or so, so that it never gets to be more than that. For all of you trying to lose weight, I wish you the best of luck. I think the meds cause weight gain, and that becoming and remaining hypo add to the problem. The doctors don't seem to care about our weight gain, so it's up to us to listen to our bodies, experiment, and keep seeking solutions that work for us. Best to all, AntJoan
Guest guest
As soon as I was put on medications, I started to gain weight even though I followed the Drs low fat diet. I felt like a blob for months then finally began to have energy again so then started walking and exercising. In one two week period AFTER my medication was in sync, my labs were acceptable(supposedly)... I gained TEN pounds and it kept going up. I was eating salads (fat free, sugar free dressing) and steamed veggies and broiled skinless chicken. I kept a food dairy and took it AND my husband (who can lie about what they've eaten in front of the husband??) to my endocrinologist. I could not understand how I could be eating so low fat, exercising and still my weight continued to climb. (My husband lost weight) It seemed as though I could not stop the upward climb of my scale. It was so disappointing. I now weigh 50 pounds more than my " before Graves " average weight. But the upward spiral has stopped. My Dr decided that I must be carb sensitive so now I have a lo-fat, lo-carb diet. The Zone was one of the diets that my dr recommended. The advice not to accept the weight gain that someone here (Arlene or Joan, maybe?) gave you is very good advice. Attack it now. My dr said we would worry about my heart/Graves first and deal with the weight later. I did not find this bb until I was too far gone with the weight gain!<G> This bb has been great. With advice and support here, my weight gain has stopped and I've actually lost a couple of pounds. Good luck! Fran to Kim >well, not to discourage you further, but I started exercising...4-5 times a week 1.25 hrs. in the gym and an hour of tae-bo twice a week (now for approx. 5 weeks) - have not lost one pound. In fact, I'm still gaining. I have changed my eating habits (although I'm far from perfect) but I eat far less now than I did at 130lbs - and now pushing 153 (my ideal and not so long ago weight 120lbs) so technically I have gained and really need to lose 33 lbs. I did hear the high protein, low carbs work well with graves & hypo patients, but darn, that's a hard one to stick to - I guess I need to suck it up and find my willpower - I would love to have an email friend to vent to when I've starved myself all day, exercised until my legs jello and get on the scale the next manana and GAIN a pound. WHAT AN UNFAIR THING! Do you keep track of what you eat at all? Did the endo's tell you how many calories they want you to eat, etc, etc.? I'm sure your 150 looks better on your 5'5 " frame than my short little (not) 5'1 " body - but I KNOW how rotten it feels no matter how tall you are....to have a closet full of clothes that you can't wear - hummmffphthjlkath (my way of cussing :-) Take Care and keep in touch - let me know if you find an answer! > Re: PTU WEIGHT GAIN CRAZY ENDO NEED ADVICE > > > I'm miserable with my weight too.. Guest guest
THANK YOU FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT! A doctor actually recommended the zone diet? Guest guest
No,no endo or GP ever told me to go on the Zone diet. Unfortunately, today, most doctors don't have time to be educators, nor do they have this kind of nutritional information themselves. When I became severely ill, with Graves', prior to my diagnosis (I didn't see a GP for 11 months, and was trying to do things in an alternative way), I took my health into my own hands, and spent some money on myself which I don't ordinarily do. I saw both a hypnotherapist (for relaxation techniques) and a naturopath. From the hypnotherapist, I got information about the Zone diet, which I had already known about. I altered the diet, slightly, to fit my needs (a little more bread per day). But what it gave me was the nuts (you eat a little fat with each meal)which have copper in them. I didn't know at the time that I needed to increase copper, but I think, instinctively, my body was finding this out and reaching for what I needed. Hope this helps, Arlene Re: weight gain THANK YOU FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT! A doctor actually recommended the zone diet? Guest guest
Hey Fran, I actually did the Atkins diet last year, before I got pregnant. I went from 280 to 200 pretty quickly. Once I got pregnant, I went off, thinking it wasn't healthy b/c I wasn't eating more than maybe 5 grams of carbs a day. I balooned back up to 295 at my highest pregnancy weight. I " m now 260 and terrified I'll gain even more. Now that I " ve read your story, maybe I need to go back on the Atkins diet before the weight starts creeping back on. Anyway, thanks for posting what you did b/c now I don't feel so bad. Jen
Guest guest
Hello all!! I am new to this group but I have to join in this weight gain discussion as it is a sensitive topic for me. I gained 25 pounds so far and am not pleased. I have been going to the gym everyday for the past 2 weeks. I can't decipher whether the weight gain is from the lexapro, the depakote or from the fact that I have been a body builder for some time but was in a car accident on my way to the psych hosp and couldn't work out for 4 months. The weight gain could be a combination of things and I just can't point my finger on the lexapro. I am currently back to work and back to the gym so we'll see if I can't drop the weight. I am also very tired these days trying to work, go to the gym, then to an AA meeting while being on meds. It is quite a challenge. Guest guest
Kim...definitely being out of the gym will do it as well as the depakote. I have read studies on Lexapro which say over the long run there is very little weight change. Depakote can make you gain as well as being out of your normal workingout routine. I work out every day and I was trying to get pregnant a while back. I had to cut back on my cardio and I ate a little more and I gained 20 pounds almost immediately. So I went back to the gym regularly and ate my usual food instead of indulging here and there and I had it back off again in a few months. I have lost a total of 111 lbs so I am sensitive also to weight gain. Suz
Guest guest
Suz How did you make out trying to get pregnant? I'm trying myself right now and have never had any children yet. I'm 38 so it is supposed to be a little more difficult. Any helpful suggestions? So glad to hear of your weight loss. I get more tired when I'm carrying extra weight not to mention being extremely uncomfortable. I'm eating properly and quitting smoking which should help. Thanks, Kim
Guest guest
I am by no means blaming Lexapro for weight gain. It definitely decreased my apetite for 2 weeks. Now I have a normal appetite. I am gaining weight because my " normal " appetite is to eat too much. I'm the only one to blame for that! :-) Alan > Kim...definitely being out of the gym will do it as well as the depakote. Guest guest
Hi Alan Maybe I'll skip the depakote and only take the lexapro..lol... I don't think my dr will agree with that though. I keep telling him I want to manage my bipolar disorder through exercise, meditation, etc.... and he just laughs at me because I've been trying to do it my way for the past six years since I got sober and it never works. I just hate the meds because they slow me down and I think I like the mania because I get so much accomplished. I don't like the depression though. Guest guest
Kim, is there something else you can take to manage your bipolar besides depakote? Suz
Guest guest
Hi Suz There is lithium but it causes serious birth defects. Due to the possibility of me getting pregnant at any time the depakote is the easiest to reduce the dosage to a safe level for pregnancy. My doctor keeps telling me to hang in there and the side effects will lessen over time. My sex life is suffering though in the meantime. Makes it very tough while trying to get pregnant...lol... I'm feeling really grateful today which is why I'm finding humor in all of this. Things could be so much worse in my life and they have been. It's just amazing to me right now that I have the job that I have and actually show up every day. I couldn't do that when I was really sick. Thanks so much for everyone writing to me.... I really appreciate it!!! Kim

Guest guest
Kim, I got pregnant with my son when I was 29 and there were no problems beyond anxiety when I was pregnant. I started trying again when I was 39 and it just didnt happen. I went thru some fertility treatments and thats what restarted my panic attacks. I had been in remission for like 8 yrs. My husband has a problem with his count after all these years. But we are ok with this. I hope you have a great weekend and good luck with trying for a baby. Youll be a great mom!!
