Guest guest
best fruitcake??????/ sounds like an oxymoron Help please My mother always made the BEST fruit cake - it is called a stirring fruit cake because of the way it is made. It is wonderful I believe because it has no " peel " (i.e. citron) in it therefore is not bitter in any way. She died almost two years ago and we had lost her recipe - however we just found it! I however have a question for all of the more experienced cooks out there than me --- has anyone ever heard of " cake spice " . That is what the recipe says. I have looked in the store and the only substitution I can think of would be allspice but I am afraid that 2 teaspoons of allspice will overpower the fruit cake --- and it is too expensive to make and mess it up! If any one has any help I would appreciate it! in GA
Guest guest
NOPE! I will only eat this one --- NEVER store bought one. I happen to like the candied fruit and this one is wonderful -- at least to me. , you are one of the cooks of the group - ever heard of " cake spice " . I will probably substitute Allspice but I think 2 teaspoons is too much - would love an opinion as to how much to use. Guest guest
Uh------- pancakes are not baked --- they are made on a stop top or griddle! (You know I am kidding you of course!) Thanks anyway. I had decided to use allspice instead but wasn't sure of the amount. I just went into my favorite recipe site (www.allrecipes.com) and did a search for fruit cakes looking specifically at ingredients. Several had allspice and I think 2 tsp (which is what my mother has written for the " cake spice " ) will work. I hope so anyway. Have a great day - considering the news...... in GA Help please My mother always made the BEST fruit cake - it is called a stirring fruit cake because of the way it is made. Guest guest
I would be delighted to! I will tell you then (reference my previous e.mails) that I don't know about the " cake spice " in the recipe - I am going to use allspice which gives the taste of cloves and nutmeg. If you try it I hope your family loves it as much as mine does. in GA Stirring Fruit Cake 1 lb. red cherries ½ lb. white pineapple ½ lb. green pineapple 3 pints nuts ¼ lb. raisins 1 cup sugar ½ lb. butter 4 large eggs 1 cup self-rising flour 2 tsp. vanilla 2 tsp. almond extract 2 tsp. “cake spice” (??? Allspice) Cut cherries in half and cut pineapple into small pieces. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs. Add flour and spices. Beat well. Add fruit and nuts. Mix well. Pour into large greased pan. Bake at 325 degrees 15 minutes and stir well. Do this 3 times (total of 45 minutes). Remove from oven and pack into a tube pan (or two loaf pans). Bake 15 minutes more. Let stand 15 minutes before turning out. RE: Help please , would you mind sharing your mother's recipe?? from Michigan 12/29/

Guest guest
Would you share the recipe with us? I actually like some fruitcakes (if they don't have citron in them!). My family makes a really good uncooked fruitcake--crushed vanilla wafers, Eagle Brand milk, candied cherries, orange slices, assorted fruit slices (candy), miniature marshmallows, dates and pecans. Press and refrigerate before slicing. It tastes better after a few days sitting in the refrig. I haven't made it in several years, but my mom still makes it. Guest guest
Thanks for the responses so far. Here is some more info on this girl. She doesn't eat avoids - I know that for a fact. Reneé is my best friend, we spend a lot of time together. She had the epstein barr (SP?) virus 10 years ago with a recurrence 5 years ago. She is taking the best acidophilus we could find in South Africa (4.5 billion per capsule, taking one a day, want to increase to three, but not sure if she should). Guest guest
Hilda, I'm a big fan of colloidal silver. I need to be as I'm allergic, or sensitive to every antibiotic out there. I've hear great reports about its use in candida, and my " B " daughter is using it now after the usual stuff (along with negative blood/swab tests for everything seemed to leave a yeast infection unchanged. She got relief in 1 day! Maybe if everything is negative, colloidal silver will work as emergency treatment (with acidophilus). Read about it here: http://www.utopiasilver.com http://www.colloidal-silver.com/ For permanent treatment, follow the candida detox program in the Blood Type Encyclopedia (Fungal Disease). Hope she feels better soon. Jannette I hope you all remember my friend Reneé. She introduced herself via my email some time ago. Anyway, we really need some advice from the more knowledgeable people on this list. Reneé has been on BTD for quite some time, being a very good girl. Never eats avoids. But: a.. she keeps gaining weight, b.. her candida is so bad that her mouth looks like that of a baby with thrush, c.. she suffers extreme fatigue, d.. her hands tingle and then go dead at night regardless of the position the lays in, e.. she is continually thirsty, f.. her skin is very very dry, g.. after getting a bad bout of flue, she is suffering double vision - fifth week now. It doesn't get any better. The doctor said her sinuses were so badly infected that it started to drain out of her eyes. Could this be possible? h.. she went for blood tests checking her thyroid and other hormones - nothing wrong. i.. she went for a fasting blood sugar test - 4,7 - normal. j.. she went for a glucose tolerance test - nothing wrong despite the fact that she couldn't see after consuming all that glucose. she had to wait at the pathologists for quite some time before she could drive home. This girl is getting more and more depressed by the day and I don't know what advice to give anymore. Help me out here guys please. She is O+, secretor, 37 years old. Guest guest
Hi Jan Ctoma can cause a great deal of pain and other symptoms, but those are usually the result of having had the ctoma for a long time. Some people go many years without noticing much beyond a sense of pressure and fullness and perhaps a ringing in the ears. Ctomas may become infected and that makes them a lot more troublesome and destructive: the major sign of an infected ctoma is an bad smelling discharge from the ear. Hearing impairment mostly depends on what level of damage (if any) has been done to the delicate hearing bones. Oddly enough, the ctoma itself can actually improve hearing by acting as a sound conductor to the inner ear, and once it's removed the hearing level can drop. It's mostly fluid in the ear and eardrum perforations that cause muffled tones. Mastoidectomy surgery is fairly invasive and, naturally it will leave you a bit sore afterwards. Some sort of painkillers are usually given. Temporary dizziness, grogginess and bleeding from the ear are also fairly common. Guest guest
, Obviously getting an implant is a major life-altering change, and it's normal to have feelings like this. That's why we are here as a group, to give you the support you need and to try and get you through the process without falling apart. Believe me.. we've all been there and had to go through the same stages of uncertainity. Just think about the reasons you want to hear.. For me, I wanted to hear the pure unadultered voices of my baby grandson as his mother gave birth to him and my two other grandsons. This was one of my main reasons for being implanted when I was. I didn't want my grandsons growing up to ignore grandma because " she can't hear me anyhow " I'm sure meeting people in Atlanta will put your mind at ease and those surgery pictures you are looking at are pretty graphic, yes, but every surgeon is different in the way they do the incision.. chances are you may get a very small incision. is right, We've all survived our surgeries, some 2 or 3 surgeries even. If you have a good support system, you can get through anything! Guest guest
, My way of thinking is that it doesn't have to be " how it's supposed to be " . It is supposed to be the way YOU want it to be. Certainly we don't always have control over the way we want things to be...but this you do. It is perfectly normal to feel nervous about the surgery!! I remember the sheer weight of not being able to hear and function and I knew what I was missing and I wanted it back! I was willing to give up music forever in order to be able to understand speech again. For me there was no other option because I could not fit into the deaf world, nor did I want to. I believed with every ounce of my being that this would work. As for the doctor's office not getting back to you, I hate that too!! But since you are more stressed out than you might normally be, maybe give it another day or two to receive an answer. The medical people do these things so often that they sometimes forget that we are having these things done to us and none of it is routine! Hang in there , we are all here for you. Guest guest
Hi, : I think you just need to give yourself time. You've got a lot of information to absorb and feelings to process. When I started researching cochlear implants at the beginning of this year, my mindset was very much against it. I also felt lost and confused and maybe even a little angry. When I discussed it with my family doctor the first time, I remember comparing the CI surgery to someone with the breast cancer gene deciding to have a proactive mastectomy. Needless to say, I was not ready. But over about 4 months, as I learned more and yes even discussed my feelings with a psychologist, I gained more certainty about this decision. Meeting the audiologist was a great help, because I felt like I could trust her. Meeting another implantee was a greater help. I needed to see the implant in person, and I wanted to hear his experience. My surgery is two weeks away. I do feel very confident about it now but I didn't 5 months ago. My take is that -- with any elective surgery -- patients need time to get to the place where they are ready to move forward. I think back on other surgery I've had (carpal tunnel), and I waited for YEARS to fix this. Afterwards, of course, I was like " why did I wait so long? " But it was something I needed to psyche myself up for and do on my own time. Guest guest
It is understandable to be confused about this.It is a big step to join the hearing world but it is a great step as you do not realize how much you are missing till you have the CI! The surgery itself was a breeze and I was not sick very much just dopey and a little sore but other than that it was great. Some people have no problem after the surgery and others do(most of it is because of the anesthetic) I am very happy with my CI and it is an adventure to be able to hear all the sounds around me and to hear voices and I am still learning what they are. Its up to you what your heart wants for you to do,,just go by how you feel about it! Take your time and when you are ready to take the step you will be ab le to do it I find it strange the Dr's are not responding to your calls but maybe they are busy and will get back to you.Do not give up calling your Dr if you have any questions about your surgery. When you go to Atlanta it will be better to see others who have CI's and it will calm your fears about the surgery. Just follow with your heart and you will know.Hope this helps. Guest guest
Jackie, you're in the hardest time with banding - the time after surgery, but before a good fill. You were only banded Sept 13. It will be a lot easier when you get to a good fill which will dim your hunger. You just won't feel like eating much. TRy to figure out what is going on emotionally that makes you want to overeat. Are you sad? bored? lonely? angry? Fins a way to work on these things that doesn't involve food. Go meet a friend. Go exercise TODAY. Go shopping and look at all the lovely clothes you'll be able to fit into. Call a friend. Get rid of all the junk food and keep only healthy things around. Chew on carrots or celery. Drink a big glass of icewater when you feel " hungry " . Clean your apt (or come here to clean, I'll send you a key :-) Do some volunteer work. Join a club. Learn to knit. You need to find things to do that do not involve eating, and will distract you from eating. If you have real trouble with this, many of us find that talking with a good therapist about the many emotional issues of banding helps a lot. Therapy is just another tool to help you do well and learn more about yourself and your choices. Your band isn't able to help you much until you get a good fill. keep the faith - you haven't " lost it " - you're just temporarily off track. SAndy r > > I'm at a total loss. Guest guest
Thanks Sandy, I am more focus today. I weighed myself today and have lost (thank the blessed stars!!!) and I am now down 36lb. I'm going to the gym in about an hour and half and later I am going to meet a friend who (I must say) has invited me around for dinner. I actually told her yesterday I had surgery, but not what surgery I have had. What I am going to say I had a throat surgery where I had a lump removed (true in some sense really) and I am only allow to drink fluid or small quantities of pureed food. (I have not lied have I, just twisted the truth a bit. People do believe it also I tried it on another friend I met last week for lunch at work.) Anyway though I may have said in my mind that I am started to regret the band today has cleared my mind abit and I am determined to let this band work for me in every way it can. Regards. Guest guest
, I am not one to suggest this because I myself am terrible at it but try to hot down notes on what you hear or dont hear. Is the pain more like nerves twitching? That can be mapped out too (I need to have this done and may want to get an electrode or two turned off). There is no set number of maps or frequency of mapping sessions. If you need a map, get one. But do try to get used to the current map, too much playing around with the controls wont let the brain adapt. *---* *---* *---* *---* *---* We Repair what your husband Fixed. --plumber sign & Gimlet (Guide Dawggie) Portland, Oregon N24C 3G 8/2000 Hookup rlclark77@... http://home.comcast.net/~rlclark77/
