Herbal sleep aidsThe most-researched sleep herbValerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a well-known sleep aid and herbalists’ favorite that both helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality. Valerian is not habit-forming, nor does it leave you with a "hangover" feeling in the morning. However, the herb has an unpleasant taste and odor—if the tea is too strong for you, take valerian in capsule or tincture form. An old-time sleep remedyChamomile (Matricaria recutita) has a long history of use as a sleep- and relaxation-promoting herb. Try drinking chamomile tea in the evening to prepare for a good night’s sleep. To make tea, steep 2 heaping teaspoons of chamomile flowers in 1 cup of boiling water for 10

minutes. Strain and drink.Make a hops pillowHops (Humulus lupulus) has profound sedative effects—even sniffing the herb helps you doze off, according to herbalist Kathi Keville in her book Herbs for Health and Healing (Rodale, 1996). To make a hops sleep pillow, mix together 1/4 cup hops strobiles, 1/8 cup chamomile flowers, and 1/8 cup lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) flowers. Cut two pieces of fabric, about 8 inches square, and sew around the edges to make a pillow, leaving enough room to insert a tablespoon. Put the mixture into the pillow and sew shut. Place the hops pillow under your regular pillow for restful sleep. A sweet-smelling relaxerLemon balm ( officinalis) has effective sedative action and makes a

pleasant-tasting tea. Try making a tea with 2 teaspoons of dried lemon balm per cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 minutes, strain, and drink before bed. Lavender—a plant with many usesIn his book The Green Pharmacy (Rodale, 1997), famed herbalist Duke, Ph.D., writes that he’s seen accounts of British hospitals using lavender essential oil—either in baths or sprinkled on bedclothes—to help patients sleep. Aromatherapists like to use the oil for insomnia, also. But be aware that not all varieties of lavender are tranquilizing—some, such as Spanish lavender, can have just the opposite effect.
