Guest guest
Hi patty Are you recovered from the root canal pain now? I hope so, I know this has been no picnic. As for the joint pain and headache, I bet anything it was prompted by the messed up menstrual cycle. This is what happens in perimenopause. You get longer apart cycles, then you get closer together cycles, then skip some, then you have heavy bleeding, then spotting and everything in between. Every time I had a period, it would start and stop. Every time it would be the day before starting, I would get a terrible headache. I would think it was over and then start feeling majorly irritable and tired, only to find it started up again. Everyone is different, but my sister --a nurse--has talked to every patient who is menopausal and every one of them has found it hard to deal with in some way. It was like a burden lifted when I finally realized that alot of my symptoms were being made worse by the hormone fluctuation. My doctor explained to me that you could test your hormones one day and find the estrogen really low, a few days later it might be high. The ovaries are functioning erratically as they near the end of their useful production. Progesterone usually bottoms out first, leaving us sometimes with estrogenic overload, and then a few days later, the estrogen sputters too. Often the testosterone has dropped to very low levels also. Testosterone affects muscle, sex drive, etc. Even if it is a rough time in our lives, it is still nice to know what's causing it. I finally realized that alot of my terrible depression was also being driven by my hormone problems. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Is your doctor an ND? My ND and my MD differ totally on hormones. My MD says exactly what you have written here, that testing is pointless because hormones are fluctuating so much. If it becomes too much to handle we can either go on the birth control pill or HRT. My ND believes in testing and trying to balance out the hormones. He believes that changing cycles is a symptom that needs to be treated. Guest guest
Hi Kathy! Thanks for your letter. Gee, hmmmmmmm, sounds like I might be in perimenopause. Blast! I was hoping that it would still be at least 5 years down the road! My root canal saga will be over on Oct 10, hopefully. That is the day I get the final gutta percha filling in my last tooth. I am pain free, thankfully. You are such a knowledgeable person on this hormone stuff! Everything you said has made sense. I think my implant ordeal has taken a toll on my hormones in the long run, which I know is true regarding the thyroid issue, but it seems that it is going to be true regarding my reproductive hormones as well. My mother didnt' go into menopause until she was in her 50's and she said it was a piece of cake. So far, this has not been fun for me, as my headaches are occuring more and more frequently. They aren't debilitating to the point of being bedridden, but they sure do make my life less joyful waking up with them often. I am wondering if our cabin has anything to do with it as well....it sits at 9000 feet in altitude, which is pretty high up there, and I am sure the oxygen is a little thinner! We've been going up every weekend, and I always notice a headache developing once we get there. So, Kathy, what are you doing for your hormone fluctuations? Are you on DHEA? This time I'm looking to you for advice! Hugs, Patty > > > > I have a strange one to add to this, for anyone suffering with > > > fibro pain. > > > > As you know, I have been fibro-pain free for several years. > > Just > > > last week > > > > I developed the same debilitating pain I had been free of for > so > > > long. > > > > Freaked, I saw Dr. Leu today. Guest guest
Yesh I know what you mean, it is a little scary. But going through menopause at the same time having silicone poisoning. was the absolute worst experience of my life. My doctor is very progressive and she says the cancer and heart disease is caused by the synthetic hormones that women were on for the past 50 years. She also says that you can't just slap on the same amount of hormone every day that you have to replicate the best you can a normal cycle which means valleys and peaks of the hormones. She has breast cancer patients on it and everything. I just know it has helped my pain level which is a relief for me. I'm just ging day by day. Hopefully you won't have a bad menopause some women don't. Ii don't think I would have if I wouldn't have had the implants because my mother didn't have a hard time. I think the implants severely disturb the hormone balance. Love to all Judi
Guest guest
Biodentical hormones are ones the come from plants(not horse urine or synthetic) and are EXACTLY the same genetic makeup that our human hormones are. The hormones from animals are not. Most women in the past 50 years have been on Premerin which is a combination of Horse urine estrogen and a synthetic progesterone. Not good for our bodies. Guest guest
Hi Patty! The altitude can definitely be making you sick. It can give you headaches, body aches and even stomach distress. Dr. Leu has me give myself a 1/2 cc vitamin B complex and 1/2 cc B-12 injection each day I'm at high elevations. You can also try taking 1 regular aspirin a day or two before you leave for the cabin and every day you are in the mountains to thin your blood. Because you are going up and down the mountain so often but not staying long, your body isn't having time to adjust to the altitude. Kenda > Hi Kathy! > Thanks for your letter. Guest guest
Thank you Kenda! I will definitely give myself some B-12 injections then! In fact, I was just thinking about doing that yesterday. I have a supply left over from when I used to take them, but haven't felt the need to in quite awhile. I suddenly thought of it a couple of days ago, wondering if it would help. Thanks for the validation on my theory about the altitude. I am glad to know that someone else has experienced this...it is always so helpful to hear from others who have gone through it before. I'll try the aspirin as well, although I am not too big on taking it since I just got off all that stupid ibuprofen with my root canal. I was worried about stomach issues from all those pills. My mother has taken ibuprofen for years for arthritis, before she got her knee replacements, (which was a big mistake in my opinion), and she now has stomach issues. I think she had an ulcer, and now she can hardly digest raw veggies very well at all. Of course, the knee implants have messed her up healthwise more than before, which is sad. Thanks for the help! Guest guest
My ob-gyn believes that testing is pointless. That is mostly because they believe in blood testing and not saliva testing. Saliva testing supposedly shows more of the big picture. My woman's health doctor did the saliva testing and I went on progesterone cream and oral progesterone. they did stop the hot flashes. but like you, I am afraid of getting too much built up, so I went off of it myself. My estradiol was very low but not in menopause. She gave me Bi-est which is a compounded bioidentical hormone. However, this is so strange. Each time I have tried it, it made my right breast get constant funny sensations in it--allmost like an itch. I decided that since estrogen causes cells to divide that perhaps I shouldn't be on it. I know for some women hormone balancing is easier than with others. I think it depends to what extent we are sensitive to hormone and perhaps how wildly they fluctuate. Hot flashes started up again recently and I went back on progesterone cream. That wasn't enough so I started up the oral. Sure enough, after 3 weeks, they stopped. I went off the oral again. I would rather spot treat my symptoms while in perimenopause and then see where I am after menopause after my hormones have bottomed out and stabilized. That makes sense for me. But I definitely do believe in getting your hormones as balanced as you can ---which may require often monitoring--because hormones affect our feeling of wellbeing and our health so much. Guest guest
- Hi Patty I had my dhea tested and it was a little low. So I took an oral progesterone with 10mg dhea. I did this for a month or two and went off. I was fine for several months and the hot flashes started again. I went back on the oral and they stopped again. I am also using the cream--I got these from a compounding pharmacy. Because I get concerned the progesterone might build up too much, I tend not to use it all the time. I am supposed to go back to my doctor sometime soon, but probably won't until I feel the need. Saliva testing is definitely helpful--they can test cortisol, dhea, gliadan antibodies, estrogen, testosterone, progesterone. My testosterone was real low, my progesterone was the worst, and my estrogen was borderline. that was a year ago. I would suggest you get the testing done to see where you are at. I think trying the natural bioidenticals are safe to use when they are testing you. I also have some estriol vaginal suppositories but haven't been using them. I think I might soon to see what I think about them. I will be going back to get retested soon. Just don't want to because they want to redo my other blood tests which bummed me out so bad last year. I am not ready to get those done yet. If they aren't improved I think I would be demolished. I think they will be but am not sure. Want to give it a little longer. Definitely though, I would get tested. The increase in headaches is an exceedingly common perimenopause symptom. seems to get less headaches when she even takes 2 or 3 living multi's women's formula a day--Garden of Life. It has maca in it and it supposedly helps with hormonal and thyroid, adrenal, etc. She is a teen with messed up hormones and lots of migraines. I just ordered some maca. I will let you know if I think it makes a difference. Maca supposedly affects thyroid too. I also have to agree that something with going to your cabin may be causing headaches also--changes in altitude sound like a good possibility. Guest guest
You're welcome, Patty. We go to Colorado every summer for a week and have for many years. I battled the altitude each time. One year we rented a house at 12,000 ft. elevation. I was sick all the time in the house and felt fine in town which was a lower elevation. My ND was the one who recommended these treatments. They make a huge difference for me -- I hope they do for you as well. Kenda > Thank you Kenda! > I will definitely give myself some B-12 injections then! Guest guest
Normally you have to go through your doctor. They test you and find you low in B-12 and so they give you shots in the office. Some women go in regularly for these shots. In some cases the doctor or nurse will teach you how to give shots to yourself, and then give you a prescription for a vial of cyanocobalamin. However, this is the rare case. Many doctors are just not this easy, and, well, you know the story. It's a fight to get what you need. You can't OD on Vitamin B-12. The worst thing that can happen is that you just lose the excess in your urine. To the contrary, if you are deficient in B-12, you can suffer neurological damage that can become permanent. So it seems to me that doctors should be more concerned about a deficiency rather than an overdose, doesn't that seem prudent? But since that is not the case, you can take sublingual B-12 in either the methylcobalamin form, (which is the best form to take) or cyanocobalamin. It is important to get the sublingual tablets! Your stomach acid will just destroy what you take by mouth. For those, like me, who wanted to get the shots, there are ways to buy the vials online or through the mail from offshore pharmacies. I work with one in Mexico that is American based, so I can be assured that I am getting exactly what I am requesting. My sister is a nurse, so she taught me how to give myself shots. I can tell you that when I first started the B-12 shots, it made a world of difference! I went from feeling lethargic to feeling like dancing. It was that pronounced. There are also foods that are good sources of B-12, mainly meat, so most people are not deficient in B-12 if they eat alot of meat. However, our implant illness has had an effect on our body such that it seems B-12 is an issue. Symptoms of B-12 deficiency include numbness and tingling, which many of us have had. It is worth looking into! Guest guest
Thanks Kathy! I hate getting tested.... I did when I first got sick. I did both saliva tests and blood tests for hormones (one through an ND, the other through my endocrinologist when the ND had discovered the Hashimoto's), and I know the ND told me I was low in DHEA, and he also put me on isocort. As for the reproductive hormones, of course, the endo said that everything was fine. They always do, it seems. I looked into the bio-identical hormones, but at that time it didn't seem urgent and the whole idea seemed scary with all the cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc talk. Since that was a few years ago, I probably should get tested again. But I am so bad about that! My last thyroid test was December 2003, almost 2 years ago, and they wanted to test me every 3 months. I just hate going to the doctor! It's probably time. We get new health insurance on Nov 1, so I will wait until that kicks in. Guest guest
Do you know what thyroid tests he took? Is there a reason you doc was thinking thyroid ? Sometimes docs don't test for thyroid antibodies which is the only way autoimmune thyroid disease can be confirmed. Other tests can be normal at given times. > > > > > > > I have a strange one to add to this, for anyone > suffering > > > with > > > > > > fibro pain. > > > > > > > As you know, I have been fibro-pain free for several > > years. > > > > > Just > > > > > > last week > > > > > > > I developed the same debilitating pain I had been free > of > > > for > > > > so > > > > > > long. > > > > > > > Freaked, I saw Dr. Leu today. Guest guest
I am not sure why the naturapath decided to do the tests he did. I went to get a Vitamin C IV because I had low energy and I thought it would help perk me up. Obviously that tipped him off. He is one of those kinds of docs that does things without you really knowing what is going on (which I hate), but he did tell me he would like to do " some tests. " The lab work came back positive for the Anti-TPO antibodies, which indicates Hashimoto's. I was grateful that he was astute enough to test for it. Guest guest
I hate going to the doctor too. I try to do just about everything without them. I guess I have been disappointed one too many times.
