Go Bob! You have good reason to be excited. You're in the right

place at the right time doing the right thing. We come from a little

different perspective, but we are both trying to lose some fat. I

just started yesterday officially, but have been morphing into the diet

for a couple months. We're about the same age. I weigh 225.

At 285 and 31%, you've got some serious muscle in there!!! Go

with the portions, and make sure your nutrients are complete, and go from

there. Personally, with the amount of food that you and I have to

eat, I wouldn't worry as much about weighing it, just that you are following

it and eating the right foods. (my "fist" portions are 2 cups! Each!)

(I had a portion sized baked potato with lowfat cottage cheese and salsa

on it last night and could barely finish it) I feel like I'm eating

more, but it is becuase I am eating more protein and veggies and WAY less

carbs than I used to.

Regarding the time of your workout, others can probably answer it better,

but I think if you don't eat for a little while before and after your workout...(check

with the Hussman site and other resources) you will still see some benefits.

The most important thing is to add muscle to that 199 lbs of lean body

mass you are packin' while burning the fat. The other thing is to

get enough sleep (which I am SO bad at).

This is a bodybuilder workout and diet, successfully marketed as a fat-loss

program. I've watched buddies around me do it as bodybuilders, but

never have myself because the diet seemed too tedious and I have a life.

I watched my cousin (very similar build and starting weight as me) use

this basic plan and over a year's time place 2nd in the Mr. Utah.

This was 18 mos ago, and he took it a couple steps further, but it works.

I just figured I could eat good and workout and I'd be ok, but the fat

has been slowly accumulating. However, BFL makes it so simple that my wife

and I are doing it, and planning on it (or close to it) for the long haul.

Good luck

Bob,

I've only worked out at night the entire time I've done BFL (started in Jan. of 2000) and have had great results. I watch what I eat carefully but I do not weigh anything. I go by the portion of a hand/fist size but I also am aware of how much protein/carbs are in what I eat.

You sure do work a lot. 75 - 100 hours a week??? When do you sleep???

Good luck to you and your wife. You've made a big step in the right direction!

Hi Bob - I'm pretty new here too - and so far everyone has been great!

I feel the way you do about weighing food, etc. I'm interested to

see what everyone tells you about that. I've noticed many here

counting protien grams, and carbo grams, and it just makes my head

swim.

DH and I are doing this together too.

Good luck to you!

Congrats on deciding to do BFL Bob! I am also 29 (turning 30 on June

18th) and finally got to a point where I had had enough of struggling

with my weight. This is a great program but it is a program for life

and not for instant results. Stick with it and result will come. I am

in the middle of 7th week and I have yet to see the incredable

changes that the people in the book have. I know I will have to do

more than one challenge to achieve my goals, but the plan is great

and you will be amazed how fast the time goes. One day you will wake

up and say to youself, I cant believe I have been working out 6 days

a week for the past 12 weeks!!!!- AMY

Bob,

Welcome.

Don't worry if the only time you can work out is in the PM. It will do just fine. Consistancy is the key here. Just make sure you are not eating too close to your workout time (say not within 2 hours).

As far as calorie/gram counting, it's not necessary, but some like to do it anyway.

Just follow the guidelines in the book and you'll do great.

Hi Rosemary.

My name is and I had surgery on Nov. 6. I think we have passed emails

a few times.

I have emailed IMCRITTERCRZY. She is in the search process. She is a very

spiritual lady and a few of us sounded especially spiritual to her and she

wanted to ask some questions. I found her to be very nice (over the computer

anyway).

Glad to hear that you are doing well.

Dear Giselle, I just wanted to say hello back. I don't know if you read it or not, but I mentioned you just a few days ago, to say how much help you gave me on a personal level. I think what I am trying to say to you and to others is that when someone gives you help that you really need, you never forget that person. You will always be special to me Giselle, and I am pleased as punch to hear that you are doing well. Don't worry about the future. What's the point? Best Wishes and Thanks from Ann in England XXgiselle_von <giselle_von@...> wrote: hi everyone,i haven't posted in months and months, but i've been busy with a new job and all! there's no real substance to this post, it's just a general hello and update. (for all the people i don't know, and now there are so many on the board, i had a laparoscopic heller with dor fundoplication at ucsf in may of 2006, about 9 months ago. i'm 29 years old. so far, so good.)physically, i feel ok right now (YAY!!!), although i have all sorts of questions in my mind that will never go away. what's going to happen to me in the future? will i need surgery again, or did this "work"? how long will this fix last? will a future

pregancy undo everything that seems to have gone right in my surgery? some of this is paranoia, and some is just fear of the unknown. i know people have been just fine with pregnancies, but it is something that really scares me. i've told my hubby that this topic is off limits until at least 2009.i noticed some recent postings about weight gain after surgery. i've gained a little, too. pre-surgery, everyone used to say to me, "how are you so tiny, always eating candy bars and junk food, never going to the gym?" truth is, i never felt really hungry pre-surgery, or i'd feel hungry, then eat a tiny bit and feel instantly full. little did i know that my esophagus was totally stretching out and staying full of food, and nothing was even getting to my stomach for hours! gross!after surgery, i started feeling true hunger for the first time in years, and instead of having food stuck in my esophagus for a day or two,

it would go down to my stomach, making me hungry again a few hours later. (i suppose this is how "normal" people are all the time, but i never knew.) so i gained a couple of pounds after surgery, and NOW i finally understand why people watch what they eat -- i am constantly hungry and need to watch it, too. but a few extra pounds are the least of my worries. i just pray that this surgery "works" for the long haul, but the rest is out of my control.for those going through all the uncertainty, doctors and surgeons, dor vs. toupet, surgery vs. botox vs. nothing, possible esophagectomies, all the other junk, i'm so sorry you have this awful thing, but at least there are some decent treatments for us these days, and hang in there. for example, i had AWFUL chest pains at random times for SIX YEARS, dismissed as "stress" by three different doctors, and now they are gone. totally gone. (i had one big one immediately

after surgery, but then NONE for the past nine months.) so things can be better, just hang in there. good night, giselle in san francisco, ca

Hello Giselle & Ann and everyone on the board!

I too am guilty of not posting in months & months and basically

wandering away after getting better.

I had my laparoscopic heller with dor fundoplication at UCSF (Dr

Patti) in April of 2005.

I am doing well generally, although I still get chest pains but not

near as bad or as for long as before. The pains are easily

controlled by drinking water. The pains seem to come mostly at

night when I'm asleep.

I have 0.00 % motility so I have to be a little careful about bread,

tortillas or other " doughy " stuff. Food sometimes goes down very

slow. On 2 occassions food got stuck, but finally went down with

water and walking.

I have only gained about 5 pounds. Food sometimes goes down slow I

fill up quick. It may go down slow, but at least now it has a place

to go !! Eating still takes patience and I am always the slowest

eater.

But I am happy with the surgery and would do it again

Dear Dave, It's good to hear from you and it's even better to hear that you are coping reasonably well. I think that even those of us who regard ourselves as being "sorted" still are aware of not being perfect, which presents itself in slowness of eating and perhaps occasional problems, but it is so much better than before, and I share with you that wonderful feeling of knowing that the food now has somewhere to go. That on its own takes away so much of the distress. I appreciate that not everyone is able to keep up with regular postings to the Group, but this sort of "popping in" now and again is very welcome. It was lovely to see your name appear. Please do it again sometime. Hellloooo everyone:) Since others are doing it, I might as well too,

I'm guilty of not posting for months as well. But I do " pop in " and

read posts, usually on a daily basis on breaks from work. Some surf

the internet, I check in on my achalasian family! I had my myotomy

with fundo just about 15 months ago, and all is pretty good,

sometimes food sticks a bit, and it scares me, but it goes down with

standing up straight and drinking room temp water. I still don't eat

allot at one time, but I'm a snacker for sure! I am always the last

one eating at the dinner table, but it's sooo much better than it was

before. Who knew eating could be so much fun! Just tonight, I went

to my parents for dinner. My mom was packing me some leftovers for

lunch tomorrow and gave me WAY too much. When I put about 1/2 of it

back, she gave me that look and told me she hates how much I don't

eat. I told her to look at the positive, look back 2 years ago at

how sick I was. But I guess she didn't know about how food never

stayed in my tummy, or E, very long before I politely left to get rid

of it.

Ann, your posts are always so sweet! If I'm having a bad day, I just

have to read one of your positive posts!!

Giselle, It's good to hear from you and that you are doing so well, I

agree with Ann, don't worry about the future too much. Just take

care of yourself and enjoy this new life!!

Nitey nite everyone!

a in St. Louis, soooo ready for spring and temps out of the

teens!!

Hi a, I am just loving this, the way that all the old friends are popping in to say hello. Do you realise how much it means to us to hear from you? And it is noticeable that the ones who have wandered off for a while are those who are doing ok. That is why your input is so valuable. It's important for us all, especially the new ones, to know that there are many many people who are living comfortably and well with achalasia and that it is not all doom and gloom and problems. I miss the people who were around a year and 2 years ago and have disappeared into the sunset. I hope that your

post will spur others into signing on for a quick update and brightening us all up. Hope your scars are disappearing nicely a. I can't think of you without remembering the famous photo of your delightful belly. lol. And if you do ever get a bit of stickage, don't forget all the crazy tricks we taught each other, like running up and down the stairs and flapping your arms around. They still work you know, even after the op. Just thinking about you makes me smile. Take care a, Lots of love from Ann xxxxxxa

Just tonight, I went to my parents for dinner. My mom was packing me some leftovers for lunch tomorrow and gave me WAY too much. When I put about 1/2 of it back, she gave me that look and told me she hates how much I don't eat. I told her to look at the positive, look back 2 years ago at how sick I was. But I guess she didn't know about how food never stayed in my tummy, or E, very long before I politely left to get rid of it. Ann, your posts are always so sweet! If I'm having a bad day, I just have to read one of your positive posts!!Giselle, It's good to hear from you and that you are doing so well, I agree with Ann, don't worry about the future too much. Just take care of yourself and enjoy this new life!!Nitey nite

Hi, I'm new. I love all the information here. Bee, you are so kind

and helpful. I am working on reading all the information.

I was diagnosed with candida 16 years ago. I'm 46 now. I did the

diet for awhile and ignored my problems. I had just had my third

child and went on the have 4 more. I was pregnant all the time and

very busy. I never noticed I was sick from the candida because I was

pregnant so much.

My last child is very sick. He was born into a home with mold, was

never vaccinated, (luckily) and was almost normal until he was 3. I

always thought he was a little different than my other children. He

was my only colicky child which I didn't get because he was breast

fed. He had some antibiotics as a child. I don't remember how much

etc...When he was 3 he had his first grand mal and has many since then.

All the different kinds of seizures. He has regressed since then,

losing all his speech and functioning. Meds never helped. He

does have a cyst on his brain which the drs (we got many opinions),

say is not causing the seizures. I read in a back post that candida

can cause brain cysts.

He is 10 now and besides having seizures, he has severe allergies,

both environmental and food. I have also read that allergies can mimc

autism.

We have seen many holistic drs and nobody has been able to help him.

I decided I had to do it on my own and here I am now. We have been

trying holistically to heal him for 5 years. He has had 2

yeast test and both were negative. I have read that 90% of the time

these tests are inaccurate. His vitamin and mineral levels

are messed up. But how can he not have yeast? I think he got it from

me and since he was my last child he got the worst of it. His brother

who is 2 years older gets migraines. Plus he was born into a moldy

home. We lived there until he was 3.

He has been eating very healthy for 4 years. I mean a perfect diet.

He has some vocabulary now, thanks to biomed and plays with puzzles,

draws and does some other things.

I had been learning about the anti-fungals and anti-virals for the

autism. I gave him colloidal silver (I know you don't like it Bee).

I knew the cs would kill any bacteria in his mouth, and I was

worried about an infection in his mouth. We were waiting to get him

in to a special dentist. He had an unpleasant reaction after giving

him the cs. When he came out of it 2 days later he was doing better

than ever! That really clicked something in my brain. Yeast. I

never saw such good results from anything I had ever given him. There

are so many anti-fungals he can't tolerate. I did 1 drop of GSE and

he had horrendous seizures. Olive leaf extract caused the same reaction.

I started researching candida again and am convinced. I am also

convinced that I need to follow the diet and many of my children. We

will be starting shortly.

He is on many supplements. He cannot tolerate any dairy. We bought

goats and I have made him dripped yogurt which he cannot even

tolerate. I am doing fermented veggies for him right now. His diet

is very scant because of his food allergies. I am trying a dairy free

probiotic for him. I think he is tolerating it. It is very slow

because I am always trying a new food or supplement on him. If he has

a reaction it is seizures and I have to wait 3-4 days for them to stop

so I can try another food or supplement.

So here we are and I am looking forward to moving forward with my

children to a healthier and happier life. I hope to learn much here!

Thank you!

jo

just a question.. did you lose your mucus plug early? or did your child

swallow anything during labour? I just went to see McCarthy on the

weekend and she mentioned this. my 1st son is autistic and swallowed fluids

before being born. But my second didn't .. he is " typical " ...

I wanted to mention I was induced and my son swallowed a lot of fluid and he is

not autistic. Could be just one connection, but not neccessarily the reason for

autisim.
