Guest guest
Supposedly protein powders contain neurotoxins (MSG or similar compounds) made in the processing; however, I haven't looked into this, and am skeptical of the anti-glutamine/glutamate positions. The main reason Sally opposes protein powders is because they increase the amount of protein one eats without increasing the vitamin A, which is necessary for protein utilization. Incidentally, Jordan Rubin, who markets Goat-tein, thinks the same thing, but sells Goat-tein because it is vastly superior to the other powders which people will use anyway. However, if you have lots of A in your diet, this shouldn't be something to worry about-- and sometimes you *want* low-fat for a particular snack or meal, such as a post-workout recovery snack, as Suze recently posted. So taking a low-temp dehydrated undenatured whey powder like Goat-tein would essentially be like drinking whey, except Goat-tein also has curd protein. I don't really think you should need protein powders if you aren't eating crap food, but in small amounts a quality one (which excludes most of them) probably couldn't hurt. Eating full-fat meats can make it tough to get all your protein without getting too full, but supplementing this with some whey and bone stock should allow more protein without as much satiety, especially if this is used to replace water, say, in your undereating phase, were you to do the WD. But quantity of protein isn't that important. The full-fat meat will increase your androgen levels, which will do a HELL of a lot more for building muscle than protein will. Guest guest
Hi, I just started using Gotein- I lift weights 4 times a week and am 30 weeks pregnant. So far I like it, I mix it with sheep yogurt, coconut oil, raw egg yolk, some berries and sometimes a tiny pinch of stevia. I still feel strange about protein powders but needed to eat something before I worked out in the AM that was light but held me over. I was wondering if anyone uses here, and if so: why? I'm especially interested if those who lift weights use protein powder. I assume people here'd be using whey protein, and not soy. - I've been using goatein from Garden of Life (www.gardenoflifeusa.com). It's expensive compared to most whey proteins, but seems to be less processed. They claim, for instance, " Goatein is minimally processed Most other milk protein powders are made from cow's milk and, though they claim to be ³minimally processed,² use several invasive processing steps, including heating at high temperatures. These methods denature many important amino acids and DESTROY enzymes and beneficial bacteria. Research suggests that processing whey with heat and acid (i.e. ion-exchange) results in the loss of several key amino acids including: Cysteine 73-77%, Threonine 35-45%, Serine 18-30%, and Lysine 19-20%. Because Goatein is processed without the use of acid or excessive heat, the amino acids, enzymes and beneficial bacteria remain in their natural form. " They also say, " Additionally, Goatein is partially pre-digested through a lactic acid fermentation process to make it even more bio-available while virtually eliminating its lactose content. Research has shown that proteins from milk that have been pre-digested by lacto-fermentation are absorbed more efficiently than those of non-fermented milk. During the fermentation process many digestive enzymes are created that aid in the assimilation of food nutrients. In ³THE MILK BOOK², s, M.D., states that the protein contained in cultured (lacto-fermented) dairy products is the highest quality available for human consumption. " You can read about it more on their site. I've been using protein powder a lot less recently, and getting more protein from meat, eggs, and cheese, but I feel safer using this protein powder than the whey powders I had been using...until someone here disabuses me of that notion Gene

Elainie I also like it before workouts, and usually have it with some unpasteurized milk & cream, maybe a raw egg yolk if I'm inspired, and usually a little stevia. I just bought some sheep's milk yogurt, so I'll probably try that tomorrow.
Guest guest
hello all, i have beenthinking about these protein powders and searching the net, but just can't make up my mind and what to think of it. i read about vegetable protein, soy, whey...... or a combo of these three. the reason for the search was, when i drank milk (lots!!!) i felt really strong, since i stopped the milk, i feel less strong, also lost 15/20 pounds. i eat and drink healty, juice, fruits. i wonder if i am lacking the protein i got from the milk. i have a physical job and run short runs daily with my dog, and i also could use some more horse power in me. i run out of steam fairly quick too. maybe there are some sporters here who could help me with this, any advice would be appreciated. thanks, rik
