Guest guest
Hi Kathleen, You are entirely correct - I have learned from my visits with two plastic surgeons and two hernia specialists that I have a weakened abdominal wall from the lateral incision. One of the reasons the "hernia" is so difficult to repair is that it is not a true hernia. But this does not explain my bulge on my back, which I think is a bulge of the inter-costal muscle. The hernia specialist I am going to see has a different technique than mesh. He said that a big reason for failure in this type of repair is that there is often inadequate tissue to attach to the mesh. I'll let you know more as I find out more information myself! I am sorry to hear that you are still having terrible pain - is it from the anterior removal of your screws (which was recent) or your revision surgery? Also, you mentioned "burning in your butt". It'll be six weeks since the removal of my posterior iliac screws. The procedure necessitated my third posterior incision, all of them starting about a quarter of an inch from my butt "crack." (Sorry, I don't know a medical term for this!) The scar is burning when I sit - I have been aware of it for weeks, but it is getting worse. I was going to ask the group if anyone has had this kind of burning in their scar close to the butt area. I tried looking up "arachnoid" to see if it fit, but I really couldn't tell from the description. I have not discussed the burning with my surgeon yet because at first I thought it was coming from an undisolved stitch in the area that is burning. The stitch is finally starting to resorb, but the burning is getting worse. Does anyone have any personal experience like this? This is very frustrating - I have been unable to sit for 16 months because of the painful iliac screws, and now that they are gone - I still can't sit! Guest guest
Laurie - Thank you for your kind response. Mine is ot painful. It is just THERE. And I suspect there's another softball-sized hernia below it! Mine doesn't make noise, but I know of someone whose did... and required emergency surgery. So I am cognizant of watching for a temp, etc. I'm trying to spend time researching the breast reduction surgery in Costa Rica to take my mind of the hernia. You get a nice vacation along with the reduction... and for only $70/day including meals! Anybody wanta go with me??? Bobbe - 1998 top wt. of 284. 3/12/03 268.5, 8/21/03 198.5 = <70 lbs.> If you can dream it... you can do it! God, give me the dream that you planned for my life. Don't postpone joy. Guest guest
> oh- i saw your pics after your PS. ouch- that looked so > painful!!!!!!!!! but it was worth it huh?? > ****** I had a much harder time with the ps than the ds. I had no real complications (unles you call blisters from the tape a complication. they encircled my incision and were about 2 1/2 " wide) But it took longer to recoup and was in more pain. I am glad I did it as I would never have felt like a success with all that extra skin hanging. And I am glad it is over as I am pretty happy with the results. Would I do it again? I am not sure I would personally have the courage. > > so you and jo did sleep reclined. what happened if you didnt ?? im > like you , i sleep on my side. was it pain or nausea that made you > sleep reclining?? ***It is hard to explain the feeling. I just felt all loose, like my guts were going to fall out or something. I never had the nausea that so many get. I have never thrown up since my DS, no not even once.... I just wasnt comfortable laying down. And then there is the getting up issue, and sore muscles...It was the pain at first tho (in the hospital) that kept me in the recliner. I never wanted to climb back into the bed, and the recliner was easier to get in and out of. Then later at home and beyond it was the loose feeling and my guts trying to find a place to comfortably stay , that kept me in the recliner. That and the fact that I am short and we have a captains waterbed, and throwing my leg over the side and rolling in and out was not going to happen with my new tummy... hth Sharon in Onyx

Guest guest
Yes, I have. It's what the doctor called a trocar hernia, meaning it came as a result of the surgery where it didn't heal completely. It looks like a little puffed-out place on your stomach -- mine was in the middle of the MGB scars -- and caused me absolutely no pain. I had it repaired in a day surgery procedure because I was going to Europe on a vacation and my doctor told me that hernias can go along for a long time with no pain and then can become strangulated and it will become an emergency situation. While surgery is surgery and you do have to have a general anesthetic, it really was not a difficult surgery. Would have rather not had it, but oh well. Guest guest
Thanks so much for the info! I will try your suggestions as I would like to opt out of surgery. My homeopath has given me some good meditations to help it retract as well. > > I have a hernia. It is in the groin area and the pain, was at times, is disturbing enough that I cannot sleep. I was eating pork rinds. When I stopped eating them, my hernia bothered me less and less. I made some ground beef jerky with anise seed and that too made my hernia hurt. Watch what you eat as some foods cannot digest well with hernias or diverticulosis/litis. > I wear a lifting belt when I have to carry heavy items. > Magnesium and vitamin C help keep the intestines clear of foods that will clog the areas that will cause pain and distress. > Massaging the herniated area helps. A doctor did this with my brother and he didn't have to have surgery. He learned to eat right and keep the area massaged. > Mz Violet > > > >
