One must be very cautious about ingesting anything that may alter immune system function, especially since nobody really understands the immune system completely. We've discussed echinacea here before, and I think, if one does choose to take it (or any sort of supplements, vitamins, or over-the-counter medications), one's doctor needs to know. Nobody is quite sure if echinacea stimulates the immune system or modulates the immune system. Those who promote its use, even in automimmune settings, say that the herb modulates the immune system. Guest guest Posted October 29, 2000 Report Share Posted October 29, 2000 My boyfriend and his mom are always getting me to take Echinacea when i feel a cold coming on because i have no spleen so my immune system doesn't work as well as it should. i can get very serious lung infections if i go to long without going to the dr and whenever the kids or jason bring home a bug i get it double and longer. any way i take the Echinacea and it helps alot for me but it causes my stomach to get really upset. i take multi vitamans everyday but when i first started taking them they would upset my stomach too. Even when i was pregnant and was taking prenatal vitamans, those would upset my stomach. Actually my last 2 kids the dr had me stop taking the prenatal vitamans cause i was throwing up more when i took them even with meals. i don't normally have a weak tummy but vitamans can be hard and forget about taking iron supplements the not only gets me sick but makes so i can't poop for about 2 weeks. lol. mom said its cause i have brown eyes. lol. any way i was wondering if any one else has trouble taking vitamans. it seems that iam the only one in my family that has this trouble. shelly Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

YOu're not alone. *g* And I tried echinacea as well. It made me sick. I once gave it to my son to ward off a cold because a friend of mine swore by it. It made him vomit. All I know is that people who have auto immune diseases are warned not to take echinacea which would include rheumatoid arthritis and lupus amongst a few. It is an herb that stimulates the immune system and for those with auto immune disease the immune system is over active and needs to be turned down because it does not recognize good cells and tissue from bad so therefore kills the good with the bad. It sounds like an over simplification but there is a warning on many bottle of echinacea that people with auto immune diseases should not take it. It made me very ill unless taken on a full stomach. As for your other prob. Metamucil works wonders but you have to take it every day when on iron.Hope thes tips help. Judy from Indy. Used for inflammatory conditions, bacterial and viral infections, yeast infections, cold and flu. Better known as an immune system stimulant. Classification: Mucilaginous herb. Cool energy.
