Pages 142-147 Enemas: Enemas are a very important therapeutic aid to cleansing and to healing, an efficient way to rid the body of toxins. During a cleanse, enemas should be used regularly, at least every day They take time, but the results are well worth the effort. Enemas are also important if regular bowel movements do not occur, and they should be used until the body is well enough to take over the eliminative function. Enemas do not interfere with the peristaltic action of the bowels; rather they help to restore it when that process has broken down. Laxatives and drugs will kill the peristaltic action very rapidly; enemas (with the addition of specific herbs) can restore this action after a period of regular use. Enemas are extremely important to help overcome any problem caused by material in the colon and intestines. They help to rid the body of parasites in the colon and its pockets, and they help wash out parasites broken loose from other areas of the body. Many seemingly unrelated symptoms can be caused by material in the colon. A type of headache can be relieved by enemas. Eczema can often be relieved through the extensive use of enemas. Case Study J Ence, a school teacher, had been suffering from eczema for years with no relief--over her face, her hands and her arms. On many occasions it was impossible for her to go to work. Doctors had done all they could for her, and she was truly desperate. She began her herbal treatment and massage therapy, along with fasts and enemas. At first her condition worsened, and she was very discouraged. It then began to clear up, and eventually went away completely. She has learned to overcome her problem and keep it under control by diet, herbs, and enemas. Case Study K Kathie Henry had a serious back problem. She had hurt her back roller-skating a few days before, and the normal arch of her back was almost inverted. She couldn't remember when she had had her last bowel movement, and she didn't ever remember having an enema. I suggested she take one half cup of pure cascara, which she did, with no results. Her mother gave her four or five enemas and called the next morning to say that nothing was happening, and she still had pain. I suggested that she continue with the enemas until something did happen. She had given her about seventeen enemas when results finally came. When she was rid of the block in her colon, her back straightened out, her pain was gone, and she was fine. Case Study L Sumi R., a Japanese girl from San Francisco, had had barium enemas for a G.I. series five weeks before she came to see us. The barium had not been completely eliminated. She was having no bowel movements and was completely blocked by the barium. Her doctors had no alternative but to suggest surgery to remove a section of her colon. I suggested that she take all the enemas she could stand, with large doses of herbal laxative, but nothing happened. She took enemas all day long for two days. When she came in the third day, a big lump was apparent around the liver and the hepatic flexure of the colon. I was able to work it part way across the transverse colon that day. The next day after more enemas, I worked it down into the descending colon. On Friday morning she took more enemas; on the fifth one, she expelled a piece of barium about the size of a baseball. With great pain she was able to expel two or three more large pieces. After we worked on her again, she expelled more barium and was able to regain her normal functions. She was fine, and able to avoid surgery. Types of Enemas Specific types of enemas are effective for different purposes. Garlic enemas are very valuable. Garlic helps to kill parasites and bacteria in the colon, being a natural bactericide. It kills unfriendly bacteria, and feeds those beneficial to man. It acts as a cleanser, stimulates peristaltic action, and rids the system of parasites. To prepare garlic for an enema, blend six of seven average size garlic buds in three cups of cold water. Use from one half to two cups per enema bag, depending on strength desired. Catnip enemas are useful for childhood diseases. Make a strong catnip tea and fill the enema bag with it. Lobelia is useful for enemas. In cases of food poisoning, use a garlic enema first, followed by lobelia. Lobelia is useful in this case, for it helps the cleanse when vomiting prevents herbs from being taken by mouth. Lobelia enemas in this case should be taken as deep as possible, in order to cause diarrhea, and clean the system out quickly. Cayenne enemas are a great pickup for that tired, sluggish feeling. Use one teaspoon to a bag of water for this purpose, and also to stimulate the bladder, as a diuretic. However, cayenne, being a stimulant, should be used with wisdom. Peach bark enemas, made into a strong tea, will also act as a diuretic to the system. Chamomile or catnip enemas are good for indigestion, as is myrrh. Sometimes two or three plain-water enemas help to clean out the system; then the herbal enema can work better on the body. Retention enemas are also valuable. Use a small amount of liquid for retention enema, about a cupful or so; retain it as long as possible in the colon. Insert it as high as possible into the body, then give the body a chance to assimilate it. For internal hemorrhoids, take one or two plain enemas, then a retention enema with garlic and about one half teaspoon of cayenne. Retention enemas may also be used when the body cannot take nutrition, or is dehydrated. Moisture can be restored to the body in this manner; the nutrients in green drinks can by assimilated into the body through retention enemas when the person cannot eat. Method of Administration The preferred enema bag has a long plastic tube that can be inserted deeply into the rectum, at least eighteen inches. Bags with short tubes leave all the water in the sigmoid colon, which can hold up to four or five quarts of water. To prepare the enema, fill the bag with the desired liquid, lukewarm for most situations. Expel a little water from the tube to let our air bubbles, which can cause cramping. Lubricate the end with a little Vaseline for easier insertion. The most comfortable and most effective position is the knee-chest position, with the shoulders, head and arms on the floor, the rectal area elevated. The enema bag should be hung a few feet above the rectal area so the water can run down (a towel rack is about the right height). Insert the lubricated tip into the rectum a few inches, then as the water is running, gradually insert it as far as possible. Never use force. Ease the tube through gradually, at the same time massaging the abdominal area to relieve cramping. If cramping becomes too painful, stop the flow for a few minutes, and continue the massage. The stomach muscles can also be flexed and contracted to ease cramping. If the flow of water stops, ease the tube back a little and try again, or stop and start the flow of water a few times to dislodge the blockage. At first it may not be possible to insert the tube more than five or six inches, but as the colon gets cleaned out, as much as 20 inches is possible. The further the tube is inserted into the colon, the better the cleansing job will be. It may be necessary to fill and expel several times, each time inserting the tube deeper. When as much water as possible has been expelled into the colon, lie on the side and retain for 20-25 minutes or as long as possible, then expel, taking as much time as necessary. Repeat the procedure until the water runs clear. The amount of water retained increases with subsequent enemas, until a full bag can be accommodated. Other Cleansing methods The skin is the biggest eliminative organ of the body. If it functions properly, it eliminates on a par with the kidneys and the lungs. During fasts, it is helpful to enjoy hot mineral spring baths and sun baths. Sun bathing is emotionally therapeutic, as well as physically. The morning sun is the best, up until noon. The rays are not as damaging during this time. When the body is really cleaned out, burning is not such a problem. Many of the tanning preparations on the market block not only ultra violet rays and their healing benefits, but the elimination of toxins and poison. Castor oil, wheat germ oil, olive oil, or aloe Vera oil are all good for sunbathing. They do not block the skin and are good to avoid dryness. (Aloe Vera and Mullein oil are also excellent for burns and sunburn). Pure water is one of the best cleansers there is. With the addition of chlorine and other materials to the water, the benefits are greatly decreased. Hot mineral spring baths are excellent for general well being, especially during fasting, for the minerals and hot water draw and pull toxins from the body. The use of a loofah mit or sponge is beneficial during a bath or shower to stimulate and tone the skin and remove dry skin from the body. Suggested Readings Airola, Paavo. "How to Get Well".
