My son, who is on breastmilk only right now, has a kidney problem called hydronephrosis. Should I stay away from liver since it is so high in iron? Have you heard anything similar about iron and kidneys? Hi Suzanne. That may depend upon the " kind of iron. " There are 2 kinds, " heme " and " non-heme " iron. Non-heme iron is from plant sources and can cause problems, and " heme " iron is from animal sources like red meat liver. Unless you have been tested and " know " you are anemic it isn't necessary to take extra iron, but eating red meat liver once a week is good.
