Human body consists of 50-70% water. Our body continuously needs water to perform all the activities and functions; therefore drinking water is very good for health. Ayurveda has laid down some essential guidelines for drinking water to help improve your health and to prevent any ailments due to the improper water drinking habits.
The Ayurvedic Way to Drink Water
1. It is better to drink water while sitting than while standing.
2. You should drink it slowly and avoid gulping down large volumes of water in a single breath.

3. Tepid water is best to drink and it is advised to avoid drinking ice cold water.
4. It is best to drink when you are feeling thirsty. When you listen to thirst cues and sip water throughout the day you’ll be drinking the right amount.
5. You should stop drinking water after you feel satiated as it is a signal from your body to stop drinking.
6. The color of your urine may indicate whether you are sufficiently hydrated or not. The color of your urine should be fairly clear and straw colored. Dark yellow urine may indicate a sign of dehydration.
7. Dry chapped lips may also indicate the lack of sufficient water being supplied to your body.
8. Normally the minimum gap between food and water should be between 1.5 to 2.5 hrs. Though it may vary according to different geographic locations, as the body’s ability to digest food depends on external factors like the outside temperature.
9. Though very contradictory, but the right time to drink water while taking food is to drink just the required amount of water, along with your food rather than drinking water before or after food.
10. If really thirsty, one can have fresh fruit juice after morning meal, buttermilk after lunchand milk after dinner. Though these also contain mostly water, the properties are completely different and are good for our digestive system.
11. Ushapan is a famous Ayurvedic practice of drinking water in the morning. A regular ushapaan helps in keeping the body healthy. It also helps to get rid of many diseases and disorders like headaches, blood pressure, anemia, obesity, arthritis etc.
Why Shouldn’t You Drink Water After Meal According to Ayurveda?
Ayurveda strictly prohibits drinking water at the end of a meal as it kills the energy required by our digestive system to process the ingested food.
This allows the food to remain in our system for longer duration which may cause the food to rot inside our system, instead of getting digested, which may lead to the formation of gas and acidity problems.

‘Ayurveda strictly prohibits drinking water at the end of a meal as it kills the energy required by our digestive system to process the ingested food….’
Can you give reference which Ayurvedic text advises this? According to some old traditional ayurvedic practitioners one should consume food
half of the stomach, quarter should be filled with water and the balance quarter space should be left empty so that solid food will be mixed water properly along with the air in the stomach to make a pulp for proper digestion. This seems to be logical. However, I would like to know if any other ayurvedic text has advised in the contrary.
This articled is very useful to all.
This is all correct, but important points are missing:
(1)
The daily water demand depends not only on the current state of the body. The ambient temperature, the body weight and physical activity affect the amount of water we need to drink a day. On average, the human body per day loses about 2.5 liters of water through perspiration and excretion. This amount of water should be supplied to the body again every day.
“As a rule of thumb: The body needs at least 30 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. For a 80 kg human (me) results that mathematically a daily water requirement of at least 2.4 liters. ”
But beware: even by sweating, during exercise or greater heat, the water demand increases. One assumes that the additional water demand per hour temperate Sport is about half a liter.
For physical activity, the daily demand for water increases to about 40 – 45 ml per kilogram of body weight, which corresponds to a 80 kg human already from 3.2 to 3.6 liters per day. If it is now even trained at high ambient temperatures, the water demand may rise again.
(2)
Most people can not drink this amount of silent non-sparkling natural water. Me too. Then my girl friend – a natural health practitioner – applied
“Kinsiologie”/Dowsing testing my body, and finally I loved to drink water, 3-4 liter without problems. And the water tasted very sweet for me.
(3)
When drinking water from al glass or cup, I took 3 or 4 per day. Much better I prepaire 2 bottles (glass or plastic) with 1,5 liter during the day. Plastic bottle can be used, but should not exposed the sun, because then particles of the plastic move into the water.
(4)
In using ph+ (litmus paper) inro urine, you can see your present status. It should be 7.5 – this is good. If you do long meditations or being enlightened it will be aruond 8 or 9. If much lesser then you produce too much aicid which should be neutalized and by drinking al lot get aut of the body.
(5)
In Ayurveda we consider the different Dosha Types – vata, pitta, kapha – and it is recommended that they drink water that is boilded for at least 10-15 minutes (vata, kapha), or 15-12 minutes (pitta) during the day. This will cleanse all the tubes (srotas, nadis) from ama (some can be only realesed by oil, seseme oil).
Sometimes we can add a few slice of ginger – the will have the effect, to collect all the heavy metals and mercury from the water.
(6)
In some places, the quality of natural water is not so good. So they use mechaical machines and filter, in order to free the water form unpurities. But unfortunately this effects ony the material level.
The wrong “information” is still in the water. Therefore, some place the water bottle on a yantra, but even the top yantra (sri yantra)is only up to 17.500 bovis energy units. Mantras are between 40.000 and 80.000 bovis. And finally if one places a living rotating Merkaba (star-tetrahedron, octahedron, hexahedron, dodecahedron or icosahedron-merkaba) – in other parts of the world als known as vimana, vajrayana, mantrayana, tantrayana, pakua, hunb-ku, Odin’s sleipnir – into the water it could go up intil 3.000.000 bovis. In summary, the best way is to hold the water in our hands, giving love and speak a pryaer or let the healing enegy and wisdom of our soul (atman, paratman, brahman, parbrahman) go into the water and change it into an elexir of life, what is healty for us right now.
(7)
for pruifying our body, pure clean water is much better that the use of juice or tea.
pure water enlivens also so important organs like liver and kidney which are important for youthful long lasting health. Drinking hot water regulates also our body weight – can make you quite slim.
Love, Kuno

very good
The comment about urine should be fairly clear like straw (confusing – what colour straw?)is questionable. Early in the morning the first urine passed is invariably more yellow-dark having accumulated and filtered excesses and things to be rehected from the system by the kidneys
Absolutely useful for todays generation.
Very informative.
Very useful information.
It is very nice to get information shared. For all purpose living without water is really very difficult. Consumption of should be adequate ( avg. 2 – 3 lts a day ) will make human life healthy, free from ailment. Govts. should ensure the basic requirement of water to everybody.
There is always wrong messages about timing and quantity of water to be taken daily and your present message is very informative . Thank u very much
Interesting and useful info on such an “ordinary” thing like water.
very informative article.I had thoroughly studied about the daily intake of water by an average healthy human in a day. I have observed more benefit when water is consummed just an hour after breakfast or lunch and taking only few sips to wet your mouth and digestive system during the day say upto dinner, and totally avoiding after 8PM. to escape from mid-night sleep disturbance. Also it is advisable to have atleast 250 ml immediately after waking up from bed in the early morning, which will do maximum good. Thanks for going through !
it’s really informative and worth-knowing article. water intake in body must be in proper amount. everyone should drink at least ten to twelve glass of water. my face-glow is the real epitome of consuming more water, hoping that for a healthy body everyone will embrace the beneficial habit of consuming more water. water should be clean , lf possible, boil water before drinking. keep drinking, i mean, water.
